I'm painting a mural on one of those big green metal utility boxes in front of someone's house, and I've been told it would be good to use an oil based primer and oil paints to paint it. I'd much prefer to prime it and then use exterior latex paints, but I worry that it won't stay on. Have you painted one of these boxes before, and if so, what did you use and how well did it work? What kind of paint should I use to paint a mural on an outdoor metal utility box?
No I haven't painted one of the boxes, but I have thought about it. Latex won't last that long because of the temperature fluctuations in the metal. Enamel spray paint I think would work the best, along with the oil based primer. Hope this helps! What kind of paint should I use to paint a mural on an outdoor metal utility box?
Surface preparation is the most important thing!!
And make sure you have permission to paint it...not from the owner of the house..from the utility itself! These boxes are the property of the Utility (ie; electric company-phone company..) and usually have stickers on them with pertaining information.
Then - take 150girt sand paper and sand the buggar! There should be no sheen on the green! no shiny areas.
Then you can prime with an oil based, outdoor primer!
and don't be in a rush! Let that primer sit for a couple days before you paint on it. More than one coat of primer would be advised as well! (Read labels!)
If all that goes well you could use OUTDOOR latex enamel and expect good results.
One Shot brand paint would work. It holds up outdoors even in freezing snow. I have painted car dealership windows with it and had it hold up for years.
After letting the paint dry, spray over it with some sort of sealant. This will keep it from deteriorating anytime soon.
