I have just painted some wooden outdoor furniture with exterior paint I would like to know if I can apply a coat of varnish or polyurethane or some clear coating as the last layer I live in Hawaii and feel a top coat would be good.I have just painted some wooden outdoor furniture with exterior paint?

Yes you can apply a clear coat over paint, no matter the type paint you used but you'll have to use the proper exterior type. There's different brands, finishes, %26amp; types for that so see your local paint supplier for more help %26amp;/or read the labels on the can to be sure to get the right one. And be cautious, many of them are for interior only.
Yes, you can. I think the first answer is confused. You can apply anything oil based to anything, but you can not apply something water based over oil.





That said, outdoor paints are usually latex (water based) because they expand with the temperature where as oil based doesn't. So go ahead and apply your clear coating, but I would make sure it is a water based clear coating so it doesn't crack or peel.

You haven't addressed what type of wood you have! Teak, cedar, red wood, wicker?


Wood is a living thing, even after processing, it needs to breathe!


Personally, just a coating of oil based primer %26amp; oil based paint should do it!
I live in Michigan and would recommend you do apply a top coat but since you live in Hawaii, and the climate is much different, I think you should visit your local Home Center, like Home Depot or Lowes or a paint shop and ask them what works especially well in Hawaiian climate.

Yes you can put a top coat over any paint. I as a rule use water based Polyurethane and it has worked very well.

You can put a varnish on if you really want to, but personally I wouldn't do it where you are. Sun acts like a magnifying glass on varnish and unless you have absolutely no cracks or rough paintwork underneath, moisture will get in, then the sun will get on it, bleach it by its intensity, blister the underneath paint and then cause staining to the underlying wood. Its really not a good idea. The only really good outdoor varnish is yacht varnish and you only have to look at boats and the high maintenance on those to see how often they have to be stripped down and re- varnished. It would be better to leave well alone. The weather will affect the paint whatever you put on it, so you may as well wait and see what it looks like at the end of the season. Then you can put on another coat of outdoor paint if it needs it.
