What is the differance between marine paint ;;and say outdoor paint??

Both have the same qualities - heat (weather)resistant, anti fungus growth, anti peeling. Outdoor paint is usually an emulsion type which means it is water based.

Marine paint, in addition to the above qualities, also have an anti fouling inhibitor - i.e. stops growth of marine organisms such as barnacles and wood borers. Also marine paints are all oil based and not water based. What is the differance between marine paint ;;and say outdoor paint??
The big difference is in the formulation. Marine enamels for example have additional UV inhibitors and additional additives to battle salt intrusion to increase the paint life for the tough marine environment. Marine paints tend to ';level'; out better when applied as finish is usually important.

As you get into the more sophisticated paints such as the polyurethanes (Imron, Awlgrip), they are specially developed for marine and aircraft applications and endure for many years under extremely harsh conditions, but are very expensive.

Ordinary ';outdoor'; paint would hardly last a season in a marine environment.
